Science World British Columbia is a charitable organization that engages British Columbians in science and inspires future science and technology leadership throughout our province.

Position Description:

Working as a member of the Community Engagement Team, the Program Specialist will be responsible for public and school programming taking place in the WorkSafe BC Tinkering Space. Tinkering Programs are led by Science World employees, volunteers and/or external organizations and can be directed towards an audience of children, families or adults.

Reporting to the Director of STEM Learning, the Program Specialist will work closely with the Community Engagement and Visitor Experience teams (and other Science World staff) to develop, schedule, manage and evaluate the success of Tinkering Programs as well as other gallery activities. The Program Specialist will be responsible to ensure a consistently high standard of program delivery and development. The position requires an organized, creative, and independent, yet collaborative, person who has excellent communication skills and experience in sharing science and technology with the general public. The Program Specialist must also be skilled at liaising with staff across multiple functional areas.

This position will require a minimum 3 hours of daily facilitation with the public in the Tinkering Space. This is a one-year full time contract opportunity with the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead research, development, communication and management of Tinkering Programs for both public and school audiences
  • Facilitation within the Tinkering Space providing our customers with a friendly, fun, awesome, wow and memorable experience
  • Lead training for staff and volunteers related to Tinkering Programs and activities
  • Develop and administer tools to evaluate and catalogue the success of Tinkering Programs
  • Assume curator role for the Tinkering Space, maintenance and operation of this gallery space
  • With the Director of STEM learning, manage inventory, content and budget for the Tinkering Space
  • Staying current and knowledgeable about the Applied Design, Skills and Technologies (ADST) BC curriculum content, classroom applications and trends
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of a university degree preferably in science or arts or equivalent relevant experience
  • Proven experience working with Science World’s target audience in an informal education environment
  • Excellent research, communication and facilitation skills
  • Creative, organized, able to multi-task, and able to work independently
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Collaborative and able to work well within a team environment
  • Able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and evenings
  • Must be physically able to safely lift at least 12kgs
