Position:                     Body Works Gallery Volunteer
Reports to:                 Body Works Gallery Curator and Science Facilitators

What is Body Works?

Body Works is a permanent exhibition at Science World highlighting the normal workings of the body for visitors age 9 to adult through engaging, lively and audience-relevant exhibits. Body Works focuses on questions people ask about their bodies. These questions are addressed in four thematic areas: How Do I Look?, What’s Inside Me?, Where Did I Come From? and How Does My Body Work?

Within Body Works is The Lab Zone presented by Genome BC. In this area, selected and specially-trained volunteers will lead activities, experiments and facilitate demonstrations.


What will you do?

Lead demonstrations and hands-on activities in the Lab Zone. Such activities may include (but are not limited to):

  • Cell and genetics related activities
  • Ultrasound demonstrations
  • Electrophoresis demonstrations
  • Glow-germ demonstration
  • Memory and perception challenges
  • Enzyme experiments
  • Genetic engineering and CRISPR

Work closely with science facilitators

Who will qualify for this role?

  • You have a post-secondary education in science (biology, microbiology, genetics, human anatomy, physiology etc.) or you are a (under)graduate student in the field(s) described above
  • You have strong public-speaking skills
  • You are able to translate complex concepts for a public audience
  • You have experience working with children and adults

Can you commit to…

  • a 2 to 3 hour volunteer shift
  • a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer time
  • attending our mandatory orientation and gallery specific training – Saturday, June 24 (8:30am to 3pm)

Availability Requirements:

Monday to Sunday                          10:00am - 1:00pm OR 1:00pm - 4:00pm

  • Criminal record check will be required for all selected volunteers
